About & Trust

Hi, I’m Robert, the Stats Prof

I am a statistics professor, and for more than a decade I have done one thing: help people understand and use statistics with confidence.

Since 2014, I have worked one-to-one with undergraduates facing their first statistics course, master’s and doctoral candidates planning and defending their dissertations, and professionals who need trustworthy answers from their data. AskTheStatsProf is the home for all of that work.

Why I Do This

Statistics has a reputation problem. Too many capable students walk away from their first course convinced they are “not a math person,” and too many researchers treat the statistics chapter as an obstacle rather than the place where their findings come to life.

I have seen, again and again, that the problem is almost never ability. It is explanation. When statistics is taught as a set of disconnected formulas and menu clicks, it feels arbitrary. When it is taught as a way of reasoning about evidence and uncertainty, it clicks, and it stays clicked.

My Teaching Philosophy

Explain the reasoning, not just the steps. When you understand why a test is chosen, what its assumptions protect against and what the output actually says, you can write about it, defend it and use it again on your own.

In practice, that means:

  • Intuition before formulas: visual, real-world explanations first; notation second
  • You do the work, I coach: you run the analysis on your own machine so the skills transfer
  • No judgment, ever: there are no silly questions in statistics, only unexplained concepts
  • Rigor without jargon: professional standards, explained in plain language
