Excel Statistics Help for Students and Business Users
Microsoft Excel is the most widely used data tool in the world, and it is far more capable statistically than most people realize. Business statistics courses, MBA programs and countless workplaces rely on it for everything from t-tests to sales forecasts.
The challenge is that Excel will happily produce output whether or not the analysis is appropriate. I have taught statistics since 2014, and I help you use Excel correctly, understand its output and know where its limits are.
What I Can Help With in Excel
Data Preparation
- Cleaning and structuring data for analysis (one row per case, one column per variable)
- Lookup and reference functions:
XLOOKUP,INDEX/MATCH - Conditional calculations with
COUNTIFS,SUMIFSandAVERAGEIFS - PivotTables and PivotCharts for summarizing and exploring data
- Power Query basics for importing and transforming messy data
Statistical Analysis
- Descriptive statistics with functions and the Data Analysis ToolPak
- Probability distributions:
NORM.DIST,T.DIST,BINOM.DISTand their inverses - Confidence intervals with
CONFIDENCE.TandCONFIDENCE.NORM - Hypothesis tests: t-tests (
T.TESTand ToolPak), z-tests, F-tests and chi-square (CHISQ.TEST) - Single-factor and two-factor ANOVA
- Simple and multiple regression with the ToolPak and
LINEST - Correlation matrices and covariance
Business Analytics

FORECAST.ETSand the Forecast Sheet - Moving averages and exponential smoothing
- What-if analysis: Goal Seek, Data Tables and Scenario Manager
- Solver for optimization problems
- Clear, honest charts for reports and presentations
Knowing Excel’s Limits
Excel is excellent for many tasks, but it lacks built-in post-hoc tests, robust standard errors, logistic regression and many assumption checks. Part of what I teach is recognizing when an analysis has outgrown Excel, and how to move smoothly into SPSS, R or Python when it does.
Who I Help
- Business and MBA students in quantitative methods and business statistics courses
- Introductory statistics students whose course uses Excel
- Small business owners and managers who want clearer insight from their numbers
- Teams who need practical spreadsheet analytics (Excel workshops)
